Good website design for doctors in India does three things: it shows patients who you are and that you are registered, it makes booking or enquiring easy on a phone, and it stays within the rules on medical publicity.

That last part changed on 6 October 2026, when the National Medical Commission (NMC) issued new guidelines on advertising by doctors and hospitals that name websites, WhatsApp and AI content directly. None of the agency pages ranking for this topic mention them yet. This guide covers what to include, what to leave out, what wins patients, and what it costs.

It is written for doctors, dentists and clinic owners in India. It is practical guidance, not legal advice, so check edge cases with your State Medical Council.

What changed in October 2026

The NMC's "Guidelines on Ethical Advertising and Public Communication by Hospitals/Medical Institutions and Registered Medical Practitioners" took effect immediately on 6 October 2026. They treat websites, blogs, messaging platforms, online healthcare platforms and AI-generated content as advertising media whenever the content has a promotional character. Here is how that plays out on a website.

On your website Allowed? What the guidelines say
Name, recognised qualifications, registration number Yes, and expected Electronic posts should disclose your SMR or NMR registration number
Services, facilities, timings and fees Yes, if factual Fee disclosure must be factual, transparent and not misleading
Health education articles Yes Public health education is permitted without cure guarantees
Patient testimonials and before-and-after photos No Patient consent alone does not make them permissible
"Best", "No.1", "100% success", "painless" No Superiority claims need a verifiable basis with disclosed method
Discounts, coupons, free procedures No Inducements that encourage unnecessary care are barred
AI-generated promotional content No Permitted AI content must be marked; no AI patient images

Which rules apply to you

For NMC-registered doctors, the operative code is still the 2002 Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics Regulations. The NMC's 2023 Professional Conduct Regulations were held in abeyance on 23 August 2023 and had not been re-notified when we checked on 23 October 2026. The 2026 guidelines sit on top of the 2002 code.

Penalties are imposed by State Medical Councils and range from a warning and ethics training to suspension and, for repeated violations, removal from the register for one to three years. Dentists follow the Dental Council of India's 2014 Code of Ethics, which expressly allows factual websites listing treatments and fees but bars claims of being the "best" or "first".

One more point that matters when you hire help: using an agency does not shift responsibility. The guidelines hold the doctor responsible for content they authorised or knowingly allowed.

Website design for doctors: what every clinic site must include

These are the elements patients look for and the rules expect. Get them right before thinking about design flourishes; a simple website design that loads fast usually serves patients better than an elaborate one.

Your profile and registration details

List each doctor's name, recognised degrees only as suffixes, speciality only where you hold the qualification, and the registration number with the name of the State Medical Council.

The 2002 code already required the registration number in the clinic and on prescriptions; the 2026 guidelines extend that expectation to electronic posts. A neutral photo inside a factual profile is common, but the guidelines bar using a doctor's photograph for self-promotion, so keep it plain and out of promotional banners.

Services, timings, fees and location

Describe treatments factually, show consultation timings, and consider publishing fees: public declaration of charges is expressly permitted. Add your address, a map and a phone number that match your Google Business Profile exactly. If you run several clinics, give each location its own page.

A simple way to book or enquire

Offer at least one fast route: a short booking form, a call button and a WhatsApp click-to-chat button for patient-initiated messages. Promotional WhatsApp broadcasts count as advertising under the guidelines, but a button a patient taps to ask a question is a contact route.

A privacy-safe enquiry form

Patient details collected through your site are covered by the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023. Its Rules were notified in November 2025, and the core notice, consent and security duties apply from May 2027. Building it in now avoids a rebuild later:

  • Ask only what you need to call back: name, phone, preferred date and an optional short reason. Never ask for reports or medical history on a public form.
  • Put a short notice by the button saying what you collect, why, and how to withdraw or ask for deletion.
  • Use a separate, unticked box for WhatsApp or marketing updates, and never make booking depend on it.
  • Use HTTPS, limit who can read the inbox, and name a contact for privacy questions.

What wins patients within the rules

Most of what brings in patients online is allowed and simply needs doing well.

Google Business Profile does the heavy lifting

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. Complete every field, keep hours current, add photos of the clinic, and link the profile to your website. Doctors can have their own practitioner profile, and multi-doctor practices get a location profile plus one per doctor. Names must match the real-world name, with no taglines.

Reviews: let them happen

Google notes that more reviews and good ratings help local ranking, but the NMC guidelines bar doctors from requesting or sharing testimonials or reviews for promotion, and bar fake or paid reviews outright.

The safe approach is to let reviews arrive naturally on Google, reply courteously without any patient details, and keep testimonials and review widgets off your website. Where exactly a neutral feedback request ends and promotion begins is not yet settled.

Booking software and speed

Clinic software such as Practo Ray, priced from ₹999 a month billed yearly, handles appointments, records and reminders, but it is not a website. Whatever you use, the site must be fast on a phone. Google's Core Web Vitals targets are a largest contentful paint within 2.5 seconds, interaction responsiveness of 200 milliseconds or less, and layout shift of 0.1 or less.

Health education pages that patients search for

Public health education is expressly permitted, and it is how a clinic site earns search traffic beyond its own name. Write plain-language pages on the questions patients ask you every week: what a procedure involves, how to prepare, recovery time and when to see a doctor. Keep them factual, avoid cure promises, and sign them with the doctor's name and qualifications.

Ideas worth copying from Indian hospital sites

Dr Agarwal's Eye Hospital homepage with a hospital finder by city and neighbourhood and a Book Appointment button
Dr Agarwal's Eye Hospital: a hospital finder by city and neighbourhood above the fold, plus doctor search and WhatsApp. Captured 23 October 2026.

Dr Agarwal's Eye Hospital puts a hospital finder by city and neighbourhood right on the first screen, with doctor search and treatment pages by sub-speciality. Copy the finder pattern if you have more than one location. Its headline is a comparative claim, which under the new guidelines needs a verifiable basis, so do not copy that part.

Sankara Nethralaya homepage with Find a Doctor and Book Appointment buttons and a photo of its hospital building
Sankara Nethralaya: factual specialities, accreditation and clear appointment buttons, with no testimonials. Captured 23 October 2026.

Sankara Nethralaya keeps its homepage restrained: specialities, campuses, accreditation and two clear buttons for finding a doctor and booking. What it lacks is fees and timings on the homepage, which a smaller clinic can easily add.

What a doctor or clinic website costs in India

Prices below are published by vendors, so read them as market ranges. Clinic software subscriptions are separate and do not replace a website.

Option What you get Published range
Template site 1 to 8 pages on a ready theme, yearly fee ₹12,000–₹25,000 a year
Basic custom site A few pages, contact form, 1 to 2 weeks ₹15,000–₹35,000
Standard clinic site Booking, WhatsApp, location pages ₹40,000–₹85,000
Agency-built clinic site Custom design, booking, 2 to 5 weeks ₹90,000–₹2,50,000

Sources: template pricing from PRED Solutions' doctor and clinic themes; basic and standard bands from Codingclave's 2026 guide for doctor websites; the agency band from ColorWhistle's clinic website pricing. Hosting, domain and website maintenance usually add a few thousand rupees a year. For general website pricing, see our website cost guide for India.

Do you still need a website if you are on Practo?

Yes, if you want an asset you control. Practo sells listings, a booking feature on its Prime plan and clinic software, but its provider pages describe no website builder, and a platform profile follows the platform's rules and layout.

Your own site carries your registration details, fees and services the way you choose, links to your Google Business Profile, and keeps working if a platform changes its terms. The 2026 guidelines also bar platforms from selling paid ranking of doctors, so paid visibility on listings is under scrutiny. The decision rule for website design for doctors is short. Put the verified facts first (registration number, services, timings and fees), make booking one tap away on a phone, and leave out what the guidelines restrict, such as testimonials, discounts and unverifiable superiority claims. Where you are unsure about an element, leave it out or check with your State Medical Council.

Frequently asked questions

Can doctors advertise in India?

Not in a promotional sense. The operative 2002 code bars soliciting and self-promotion but allows formal announcements and public declaration of charges, and the NMC's October 2026 guidelines add detail for websites, social media, WhatsApp and AI. Factual information such as qualifications, registration number, services, timings and fees is allowed.

Can I show patient testimonials or Google reviews on my website?

No. The 2026 guidelines bar using patient testimonials to promote services and bar doctors from requesting or sharing reviews for promotion, and they state that patient consent does not make a testimonial permissible. Let reviews appear naturally on Google, and reply without sharing any patient details.

Can I show my consultation fees on my website?

Yes. Public declaration of charges is expressly permitted under the 2002 code, and the 2026 guidelines require any fee disclosure to be factual and not misleading. Dentists' websites may also list treatments and fees under the Dental Council's 2014 code. Avoid discounts, coupons and limited-time offers.

How much does a clinic website cost in India?

Published prices start around ₹12,000 a year for template sites. Basic custom sites cost ₹15,000 to ₹35,000, standard clinic sites with booking and WhatsApp ₹40,000 to ₹85,000, and agency-built sites ₹90,000 to ₹2.5 lakh. Clinic software such as Practo Ray is a separate subscription.

How do I make a website for a doctor?

Start with what patients and the rules expect: each doctor's name, recognised degrees, registration number and State Medical Council, then services, timings, fees and a location that matches your Google Business Profile. Add one fast way to book, such as a short form, a call button or WhatsApp click-to-chat, and keep the form to what you need to call back. Leave out testimonials, discounts and unverifiable superiority claims, and make sure the site is fast on a phone.

The Main Cost Factors & Price Ranges

The final cost of your e-commerce website really comes down to two key choices you'll make.

1. Your Platform Choice (Shopify vs. WooCommerce)

This is your foundation. Think of Shopify as renting a premium, ready-to-use shop in a high-end mall—it's easy to manage and very secure, but you pay a monthly rent. WooCommerce is like buying the land and building your own shop—it offers more flexibility but requires you to manage your own hosting and security.

For most new D2C brands in India, setting up a clean, professional, and sales-ready store on either platform is the starting point.

Investment

₹2,000 – ₹5,000 per post

Remember to factor in the small ongoing costs, too. With Shopify, you have a monthly subscription fee. With WooCommerce, you pay for your own annual hosting. For both, payment gateways like Razorpay or PayU will charge a small transaction fee (usually around 2%) on every sale you make.

2. Design Complexity & Custom Features

The next price jump comes from customization. If you want to move beyond a clean template and require a more unique brand design, advanced features like product subscriptions, complex shipping rules, or integration with your inventory software, the scope of work increases.

This is for established businesses that need their online store to perform more complex tasks and have a highly branded feel.

Investment

₹2,00,000 – ₹5,00,000

(For large-scale enterprises needing fully custom solutions with thousands of products, investments typically start at ₹8,00,000+).

Conclusion: Taking the First Step

Launching a professional e-commerce store in India is a highly accessible investment. The key isn't to build the biggest, most complex store on day one, but to start with a powerful and reliable foundation that can scale as your brand grows.

We are currently partnering with a select number of ambitious brands to build their foundational e-commerce presence. If you have a clear vision for your online store, let's have a conversation.
