Most guides on this topic are written by companies selling an AI design tool. This one is written by an agency that uses those tools every day and still gets paid to fix what they produce. AI can genuinely compress website design from weeks to days: moodboards in minutes, wireframes in an hour, first-draft copy on tap. But if you design with AI and skip the human passes, you ship a site that looks like everyone else's and converts like a template. Below is the exact workflow we use at Gleam Studio, from brief to shipped site, including the three QA passes AI cannot do for you.

The AI website design workflow at a glance

Here is the full AI website design process in order. Every step is expanded below.

  1. Write the brief yourself. Audience, one conversion goal, three reference sites, positioning.
  2. Generate moodboards and concept directions with AI. Three directions, then kill two.
  3. Generate wireframes and layouts in Figma. Treat AI output as a wireframe, never a final design.
  4. Draft the copy with AI, then rewrite the message. AI writes structure well and positioning badly.
  5. Generate imagery and graphics, carefully. Abstract visuals yes, people and logos no.
  6. Human pass 1: brand. Replace AI defaults with your type, color, and spacing system.
  7. Human pass 2: conversion. One primary CTA per page, proof near every claim.
  8. Human pass 3: accessibility. Contrast, focus states, heading order, alt text.
  9. Build it in Webflow and ship. A design that never launches is a moodboard.

Steps 1 through 5 are where AI saves you real time. Steps 6 through 8 are where humans earn their fee. Skip them and the savings evaporate in lost conversions.

How to design with AI, step by step

1. Write the brief yourself

AI amplifies whatever you feed it. Feed it "modern website for a SaaS company" and you get the same layout the last ten thousand people got. Before opening any tool, write one page: who the site is for, the single action you want visitors to take, three competitor or reference sites with a note on what you like about each, what makes your offer different, and five words describing your tone. This takes an hour and it is the highest-leverage hour in the entire project. Every prompt you write from here on quotes this document. We have never seen a good AI-assisted site come out of a vague brief, and we have reviewed a lot of AI-assisted sites.

2. Build moodboards and pick a direction

Use an image model to explore visual territory fast. Prompt for three deliberately different directions: for example "editorial and typographic", "soft gradients and depth", "brutalist and high-contrast". Generate a handful of frames per direction, pull them into a board next to real screenshots from your reference sites, and kill two directions the same day. The point is not to use these images on the site. The point is to make the taste decision early and cheaply, before anyone designs a single real screen. One warning: do not let the model pick your brand palette from nothing. It gravitates to the same blue-purple gradients everyone else's model gravitates to.

3. Generate wireframes and layouts in Figma

This is where AI in Figma earns its keep. Figma's AI design generator turns a written prompt into editable layouts with real layers, and tools like Relume and Uizard do similar work for sitemaps and wireframes. Feed them your brief, generate page structures for every template you need (home, service, pricing, contact), and you have a clickable skeleton in an afternoon instead of a week. The discipline that matters: treat every generated screen as a wireframe. The layout logic is usually sound. The specific type choices, spacing, and component styling are placeholders wearing a suit, and they get replaced in the brand pass.

4. Draft the copy with AI, then rewrite the message

AI is genuinely good at copy structure: page hierarchies, section order, headline variants to react to. Let it produce the full first draft. Then rewrite the message, because left alone it defaults to claims that could describe any company on earth. "We help businesses grow with innovative solutions" is not copy, it is packing foam. Your rewrite pass replaces every generic claim with something only you can say: real numbers, named tools, specific outcomes, actual objections answered. A useful test: if a competitor could paste your homepage headline onto their site without anyone noticing, the headline is not done.

5. Generate imagery and graphics, carefully

AI image generation is production-ready for a narrow band of website imagery: abstract backgrounds, gradients, textures, simple spot illustrations, and hero graphics that do not depict real things. It remains risky for anything a visitor will inspect: hands, faces, text inside images, product shots. And two things are off-limits entirely: never generate fake team photos, and never generate fake client logos or badges. Visitors increasingly recognize AI portraits, and being caught faking your own team is a trust incident, not a design shortcut. Photograph real people, or use honest abstract art instead.

6. Human pass 1: brand

Every AI design tool has a house style, and every site that skips this pass ships in it. The brand pass replaces the defaults with decisions: your typeface pairing and scale, your palette applied with intent, your spacing system, your components restyled to feel like one family. This is also where identity work stays human. AI logo generators output disposable clip art; a mark you will live with for years is a different job, and we broke down what that actually costs in our guide to logo design cost in India. If the site could belong to any of your competitors after this pass, the pass is not finished.

7. Human pass 2: conversion

AI optimizes for looking plausible, not for converting, because it has never seen your analytics. The conversion pass is deliberate: one primary call to action per page, a five-second test on the hero (can a stranger say what you do and for whom?), proof placed next to the claims it supports rather than ghettoized in a logo strip, forms cut to the minimum fields you will actually use, and a mobile check done on a real phone. This pass matters most when the site has a job to do on day one, which is why it is the core of our approach to website design for startups.

8. Human pass 3: accessibility

AI-generated designs fail accessibility by default: low-contrast grey-on-white text, missing focus states, decorative headings out of order, images without meaningful alt text. This is not a niche concern. WebAIM's annual Million report keeps finding detectable WCAG failures on roughly 95 percent of home pages, and AI tools learned from that same web. Run the pass against WCAG basics: 4.5:1 contrast for body text, visible keyboard focus, one logical heading order per page, form labels that are real labels, alt text written for a human. It takes a few hours and it is the difference between a site and a liability.

9. Build it in Webflow and ship

A design that never launches is a moodboard with a budget. We build almost everything in Webflow because it keeps design intent intact from Figma to production without a translation layer of developers reinterpreting your spacing. We compared that choice against prompt-to-site tools in our no-code vs AI website builders guide. If you are new to the platform, start with what Webflow is, then follow a proper Figma to Webflow process: structure first, class system second, content third, interactions last. AI can help here too, generating layout variants and cleaning up copy in context, but the build discipline is human. The same applies if you vibe code the build instead: the prototype is the sketch, not the site. Ship the site, watch real behavior for two weeks, then iterate on data instead of taste.

Where AI is good enough, and where it embarrasses you

The honest split, from shipping AI-assisted sites and from auditing other people's:

Task Verdict Why
Moodboards and concept exploration Good enough Cheap, fast taste decisions before real design work starts.
Wireframes and page layouts Good enough as a starting point Layout logic is sound; styling is placeholder and must be replaced.
First-draft copy Good enough as a draft Strong structure, generic message. Rewrite the claims.
Abstract imagery and backgrounds Good enough Nobody inspects a gradient for six fingers.
Logos and brand identity Embarrasses you Generic marks, no strategy, and murky ownership.
Team photos and client badges Embarrasses you Faking people or proof is a trust incident when spotted.
Final UI polish and micro-interactions Embarrasses you The house-style sameness is exactly what visitors now recognize.
Accessibility compliance Embarrasses you AI tools fail contrast, focus, and heading order by default.

The pattern is consistent: AI is excellent at volume and structure, and weak at judgment and accountability. Use it to get to a decent draft in days, then spend the saved time where it compounds: brand, conversion, and accessibility. That division of labour is how our design service runs internally, and it is why AI has made good designers faster rather than unnecessary.

The workflow above is the whole answer to how to design with AI without shipping something generic: let the machine produce the raw material, and keep the decisions human. Teams that do both ship faster and better. Teams that do only the first half ship faster and worse.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI design a whole website by itself?

It can produce a complete-looking website, yes: layout, copy, and images from a single prompt. What it cannot do is make the site specifically yours. Output without human passes carries generic positioning, a recognizable house style, and accessibility failures by default. Treat fully automated output as a first draft, not a finished product, and budget human time for brand, conversion, and accessibility work.

What is the best AI tool for website design?

There is no single best tool; there are best tools per step. Figma's AI features and Uizard are strong for layouts and wireframes, Relume for sitemaps and wireframe structure, Midjourney-class image models for moodboards and abstract imagery, and LLMs for first-draft copy. Pick one tool per step of the workflow rather than expecting one product to carry a project from brief to launch.

Will AI replace web designers?

It is replacing production work, not design judgment. Generating layout variants, resizing assets, and drafting copy used to fill a designer's week; AI now does that in hours. What clients still pay for is exactly what AI cannot supply: brand decisions, conversion strategy, taste, and accountability for results. Designers who use AI for volume and keep the judgment work are more valuable now, not less.

How much does it cost to design a website with AI?

Tool costs are minor: AI design and image tools typically run a few thousand rupees per month combined. The real budget is the human work AI does not remove: brand, conversion, accessibility, and the Webflow build. An AI-assisted agency project usually costs less than a traditional one because production hours drop, but it is nowhere near free, because the judgment hours remain.

Is AI-generated design bad for SEO?

The design process does not matter to Google; the output does. An AI-assisted site with clean heading structure, fast load times, and genuinely useful copy ranks fine. Problems come from lazy output: boilerplate AI copy that matches a thousand other sites, missing alt text, and bloated markup from page-builder exports. Run the human passes and a proper technical checklist and the ranking risk disappears.

The Main Cost Factors & Price Ranges

The final cost of your e-commerce website really comes down to two key choices you'll make.

1. Your Platform Choice (Shopify vs. WooCommerce)

This is your foundation. Think of Shopify as renting a premium, ready-to-use shop in a high-end mall—it's easy to manage and very secure, but you pay a monthly rent. WooCommerce is like buying the land and building your own shop—it offers more flexibility but requires you to manage your own hosting and security.

For most new D2C brands in India, setting up a clean, professional, and sales-ready store on either platform is the starting point.

Investment

₹2,000 – ₹5,000 per post

Remember to factor in the small ongoing costs, too. With Shopify, you have a monthly subscription fee. With WooCommerce, you pay for your own annual hosting. For both, payment gateways like Razorpay or PayU will charge a small transaction fee (usually around 2%) on every sale you make.

2. Design Complexity & Custom Features

The next price jump comes from customization. If you want to move beyond a clean template and require a more unique brand design, advanced features like product subscriptions, complex shipping rules, or integration with your inventory software, the scope of work increases.

This is for established businesses that need their online store to perform more complex tasks and have a highly branded feel.

Investment

₹2,00,000 – ₹5,00,000

(For large-scale enterprises needing fully custom solutions with thousands of products, investments typically start at ₹8,00,000+).

Conclusion: Taking the First Step

Launching a professional e-commerce store in India is a highly accessible investment. The key isn't to build the biggest, most complex store on day one, but to start with a powerful and reliable foundation that can scale as your brand grows.

We are currently partnering with a select number of ambitious brands to build their foundational e-commerce presence. If you have a clear vision for your online store, let's have a conversation.
